Hot spot Nr.2 T-Ann Cake.

It was complete different experience from our other hot spot place we've been, but never the less just as exiting ; Ann is lovely woman that runs her own Bakeshop and Cafe. Lovely place with quirky style: everything home baked and made from scratch with mismatched coffee cups and saucers.

Ann has a degree from Abertay University in Dundee. Always loved food and after extansive travelling decided to start baking. She started with local farmer markets. It took her a full year to open her own business: from looking at premises, to getting all permissions to finally opening the cafe. But after a long year it finally opened on 16^th of December 2010. After successfully running business for more than a year Ann doesn’t do much of advertising, except her blog and Face book page, that have more than 1000 likes. She said a lot of people come in because they seen something on the menu that is posted everyday on the page.

A lovely place to visit with lovely open kitchen, nice charming staff and of course Ann herself.

Hot spot Nr.1: Not Just Design

As part of our subject: professional Design Practice our tutor Lora organized the meetings for our groups with local Creative businesses. So all of us had places to visit and had an amazing chance to pick brain of people who do something similar to what we want to do: Work in Creative and Design Industry.

Dental practice like a SPA, with Jennifer, Jodie, Me, Rebecca and Andy Rice.

So the first meeting we had was with Andy Rice, from Not JustDesign. I think most of our group were overwhelmed at how much information we got out of two hours with Andy. He shared so much with us: why he stayed in Dundee, what he does as current projects, what to look after industry, told us about small things that we should look up and pay attention to, as well as wrote down some names for us to look up as well.

Andy said: “Design is everywhere. If you want to do it you should be living and breathing DESIGN.” And Andy does. From amazing projects that takes him to Antarctica to designing West House Drinking and Eating Establishment in Dundee, when every small things matters and are handpicked.

We had a 40 minutes long chat with him in Tonik, and we hardly had to ask any questions, all we had to do is to absorb information that was provided for us.  But most important things I think I’ve learned personally from Andy were: “Don’t be scared of trying out something, even if this is very unconventional”; “Work hard on it” and “Make it happen”.

After our chat we had amazing chance to see West House Drinking and Eating Establishment a day before its opening. And on the way there we popped in to the Beam: dental practice in Dundee, design of which make you feel more like you are in SPA Salon rather than Dentist.

West House Drinking and Eating Establishment was coming together when we came in. Attention to detail was just amazing from work of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design student on the bar to very old book press that was restored specially for this place and it took a heavy machinery just to put it inside.

Later on after the place was open I had a chance to have a lunch there and it was amazing. Place is fresh, full with amazing details and great service as well. Definitely will need to visit again soon.

В рамках нашего предмета: Профессиональная практика дизайна,  наш преподовател Лора организовала встречи для нашыых групп с местными творческими предприятиями. Так что у всех из нас были места для посещения и была удивительная возможность познакомиться с людьми, которые делают нечто подобное тому, что мы хотим сделать сами в будущем: работать в творческой и дизайнерской отрасли.

Позже, после того, как место было открыто у меня была возможность пообедать там, и это было удивительно. Место свежее, полное с удивительных деталей, а также отличный сервис. Определенно нужно будет посетить в ближайшее время.

So this is a post about the idea behind this blog.  As student at Dundee College we had a very interesting subject: Professional Design Practise.  10 year ago you needed a web-site to promote your work and process was so complicated. Now in our day and age of technology it’s complicated and easy to promote what you do using internet. And the task for this subject was: created blog, about Dundee as city, what is inspires you in Dundee; how it’s influences you design practice.

As I mentioned in the info about me I’m Russian, hence reason for my blog to be bilingual: English and Russian.

My family lives in different country, I reach out for them, but blog could be a connection to show my work to my friends and family.

I live in Tayport, Fife at the moment, but I come to college every time by crossing bridge. Dundee for me all the time was: place you get to by crossing the bridge.  If bridge is closed, I can’t be there.

The other thing,  in my design practice I don’t  use only information that I get in college and around here, but I use internet and blogs from all over the world to find information as well. I mix all of that and create something new.

So for me all the time I was thinking about Dundee, College and my design practice I was coming back to the bridge, I was building bridge between what I do here in Dundee , Scotland and what people do around the world:  so that’s why this blog is named: Building Bridges.

So in future I will be building more bridges: will write about things I do: college, DIY and any other projects, interviews with people I meet here and  all over the world, other people work that inspires me as well . So please follow my blog for more interesting posts.

Dundee College Fashion Show 2010

I already wrote about how everything started, but it took me 11 year, University degree, moving countries and basically starting life from zero again here in Scotland to finally decide that I do want to do something with my dreams.

So after I’ve me my friend Dina, how studied in Dundee College at the time and suggested I applied to college when I told her about time 11 years ago.

So before I had my interview I went to the Dundee College Fashion Show 2010. Less did I know that a year on I will be modelling myself, but this is different story for a later time, so keep following, but here are images that I took that day that inspired me and made my decision very easy.

Dina Mackins

This post I wanted to dedicate to my friend and person that inspired me to apply to Dundee College.

When I've met Dina just over 2 year ago she was studying in Dundee College herself. At the moment she is studying fine art at Dundee University: Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art& Design in her second year. In the end of April, while we had a cup of coffee, I mentioned that I would love to see her work and I was lucky enough as her work was in DJCAD still put up on display for her assessment.

Here are some of her amazing paintings.

Dress: Alice/ Платье Алисы

This post will be quick one.

5 month ago we were given brief to produce from 5 to 10 dress design for an amazing Alice Marra from band The Hazy Janes. We had a chance to meet Alice and ask her questions about what she likes to wear on stage and off it, what kind of fabrics she would prefer and loads of other questions. I’ve come up with 6 different designs based on information we’ve got from Alice and from personal inspirations. So here are the designs.

Alice and our tutor Tracey Stewart Thompson then choose the one we are in process of finishing, this month. My favourite was design number 6 and it was very cool that Alice and Tracy choose this one as well. Can't wait till end result.
